Challenge
For over a decade, Artec Design has been the trusted electronics engineering and product development partner for Ridango. In the DV21R ticketing validator project, our focus was on elevating the user experience by: 1) integrating a large touchscreen display, 2) enabling fast ticket validation and contactless payments in full compliance with Visa and MasterCard transit terminal standards, and 3) securing certifications for E-Mark, railway applications, and high-level enclosure protection (IP and IK ratings).
A key design goal was to deliver an intuitive Pay-As-You-Go solution for travelers, ensuring quick boarding and a superior ride experience. With this solution, travelers can effortlessly purchase tickets by simply tapping their contactless bank card (cEMV) at the validator. Developed specifically for public transport, this system adheres to all Visa and Mastercard guidelines for mass transit.
Solution
The DV21R self-service validator is a cutting-edge device designed to meet the demands of modern transit systems. As part of Ridango’s Automated Fare Collection (AFC) system, it streamlines public transport ticketing and enhances the passenger experience.
This sleek, modern validator is suitable for installation on buses, trams, and other public transport vehicles. It reads and validates a wide range of contactless smart cards and mobile tickets, including NFC-enabled bank cards, EMV-compliant smart cards, and QR code-based tickets. The device features a 7″ high-resolution color touchscreen that delivers clear, intuitive instructions, ensuring ease of use for passengers.
Engineered for durability, the DV21R validator is built to withstand the challenges of daily public transport use. Its high-quality construction includes an IK08-rated enclosure resistant to wear and tear and an IP54 rating for dust and water protection. Additionally, the device is tamper-proof and equipped with advanced anti-fraud measures to safeguard against ticket tampering and other fraudulent activities.
The DV21R’s exceptional quality is demonstrated by its extensive certifications. It has achieved EMV Level 1, EMV Level 2 (for Visa and MasterCard), and EMV Level 3 (MasterCard M-TIP, Visa payWave) certifications, alongside E-Mark and PCI-DSS compliance for the entire payment pipeline. Our strategic partnership with Ridango has also secured the prestigious EMVCo certification, supported by major payment networks like American Express, Discover, JCB, Mastercard, UnionPay, and Visa. The manufacturing process adheres to MasterCard TQM standards, underscoring our commitment to excellence and innovation in the industry.

Impact
The DV21R is the latest addition to Ridango’s DV series of ticketing validators, bringing significant advancements over previous models. This new generation of validators enhances both operator efficiency and traveler convenience with its user-friendly, robust, and versatile design. The key benefits of the new ticket validator are:
- Enhanced Information Sharing: The 7″ LCD display provides a new channel for information and marketing, offering dynamic content to passengers.
- Accessibility Improvements: Includes a contrast theme, voice-over mode, and magnifier to assist passengers with disabilities.
- Independent Ticket Sales: Reduces driver workload by enabling autonomous ticket sales.
The DV21R is already making a significant impact, with thousands of units installed across public transport vehicles in countries such as Sweden and Lithuania, including the city of Vilnius. In Vilnius alone, the DV21R is in use in nearly 700 vehicles, serving an average of 346,000 public transport trips daily. Ridango has successfully deployed 2,000 of these next-generation validators across buses, trams, and trolleybuses in the Lithuanian capital.
We are committed to enhancing the travel experience for even more passengers as we support Ridango in expanding to new cities and countries.
