Challenge

The modern open-plan office, despite fostering collaboration, introduced serious problems affecting productivity and privacy. In these busy environments, focused work and confidential communication become nearly impossible tasks. The main challenge was converting a simple soundproof booth into an immediately usable, self-regulating area that actively supports the user’s workflow without interruptions.

A major operational hurdle involved correcting the high incidence of “ghost bookings” and scheduling conflicts common in traditional meeting rooms. This required deep technological integration from sensorics into the scheduling ecosystems. Automated occupancy solutions were essential to solve availability friction and guarantee accurate, real-time resource allocation.

The final challenge was addressing the financial and environmental unsustainability of running high-power systems in thousands of pods continuously. The system needed to be intelligent, energy-efficient, and remotely manageable. An additional value add was to drastically limit the consumption of high-power resources, such as advanced ventilation and lighting, ensuring they only operate during actual occupancy.

Solution

Artec Design supported the development of Framery’s new smart pod family, released in 2024, by designing the custom-engineered central controller electronics. We utilized Altium Designer for both schematic capture and Printed Circuit Board (PCB) layout design, creating a highly integrated central control unit. This unit manages complex digital processing, connectivity for high-resolution touchscreen LCDs, and incorporates advanced mmWave sensorics for precise occupancy detection. It also manages all essential physical I/Os, including control over stepper motors, dynamic lighting systems, and high-flow ventilation units.

This high-reliability electronic foundation enables organizations and end-users to maximize their workspace efficiency. The system is designed for flexible deployment, operating either as powerful, standalone units or by leveraging secure cloud connectivity for enterprise management and analytics. Furthermore, the specialized electronics platform serves as the essential basis for sophisticated embedded and cloud software solutions, allowing Framery to continuously develop and deploy advanced features throughout the product lifecycle.

Framery has designed a sustainable smart pod family, prioritizing longevity and environmental responsibility. This commitment is evident in the selection of materials, including the physical pod structure, which is built using sustainably sourced materials. The enduring design features robust interior and exterior materials, fabrics featuring the EU Ecolabel (made from recycled PET), and a timeless aesthetic, ensuring the pods are a long-term workspace improvement investment.

To complement this focus on durability and sustainability, we supported Framery by providing custom central controller electronics design. A crucial consideration for this design was achieving the required high reliability and longevity for critical system, matching the longetivity of the physical pod structure.
