Challenge
Dialysis is a life-sustaining treatment for patients with kidney failure. Typically performed three times a week for four hours, it works by purifying blood externally. However, a critical drawback lies in the lack of continuous feedback on treatment efficiency. Blood purity is currently assessed through laboratory analysis, which is conducted only once a month or less frequently.
This leaves medical teams with minimal insight into the majority of treatments, making it difficult to optimize therapy and maximize toxin removal. Without real-time data, nephrologists and nursing staff face significant challenges in tailoring treatments to improve outcomes and patient survival.
Solution
Artec Design has developed an advanced on-line dialysis sensor for Optofluid Technologies that brings real-time precision into dialysis monitoring. Based on the proprietary MCM (multicomponent monitoring concept), the solution leverages breakthrough optical methods to track toxic waste removal directly during the treatment process.
Unlike conventional approaches limited to Urea and Uric Acid measurements, this embedded device monitors a wide spectrum of clinically relevant toxins, including Protein Bound Molecules and Middle Molecules, and thus delivering continuous data with stable performance.
The sensor integrates custom electronics, embedded software, and advanced product design, ensuring high reliability in medical environments. With this technology, dialysis treatments can be actively adjusted. Therefore, improving therapy management and enabling up to a 20% increase in patient survival.
By combining state-of-the-art electronics, embedded software engineering, and product development, Optofluid Technologies has changed real-time dialysis monitoring into a practical, scalable solution that empowers clinicians and enhances patient care.
